I love it when we think “we KNOW” what’s up! So…here’s the story. First, you have to know I live in the South and in a city where for some reason, they do NOT have laws against the homeless and various assorted people standing on street corners. You get slightly immune after awhile, not to the issue, but to the same people standing on the same corner. There IS an exception that I observed. The newspaper man. I’m not being sexist here, they really are only men.
So today, I am driving by a guy selling newspapers and he approaches my car while I was sitting at a long light. I plastered a smile on my face and said, “No thank you.”. He said, “I was just going to tell you God Bless you and have a nice day!”. Okay. I can live with that. I admire those who help themselves and he was doing something versus just holding a sign so I went into my purse to give him a few dollars (although I don’t have time to read the paper). I pulled out my only bill, a twenty. Geez. Really? Yep.
I called him over and said, “I’m going to bless you.” I handed him the 20 dollar bill. What happened next taught me THE LESSON. He said, “Oh my God, Oh my God and jumped up and down and started blowing me kisses in the middle of a 5 way street. I was humbled.
Here’s why. I was trying to bless him, but he blessed me with a couple of things. First, I remembered what i always knew. That our money and resources go exponentially further when used in someone’s life who is less fortunate at the moment. In other words, our dollars, talents and resources make a bigger and larger impact. There was a time in my life when I too would have been jumping up and down to receive a twenty. Heck, I was happy when I found enough change in my couch cushions for gas. The other huge lesson is GRATITUDE. He was so happy and thankful. Yet most of us are so rich in health, love and prosperity we don’t take the time to be grateful for what we have and we don’t take the time to share that blessing with others.
I have found the most amazing organization that allows such personal and direct contact with those you “bless”. It’s called Children International (www.childreninternational.com). I have two children, one from the Philippines and one from Guatemala. It is because of my amazing and beautiful clients that I am able to bless others. I am in such gratitude and again so humbled by this energetic “flip”. It’s a reminder to buy the person in line behind you their coffee or meal. Leave an extra large tip for your cab driver or server and generally spread sunshine wherever you go. You may just receive back much more than you could ever give.
